This page serves as a simple glossary of terms related to personal injury; as well as a description to assist with the understanding of the meanings of the common terminology used within the topic of tort, tort law and personal injury law. ACCIDENT
An accident is an event that has occurred unexpectedly or unintentionally. Various types of accidents occur which include collisions, falls and car accidents. These accidents are covered under tort & personal injury law.
ACCIDENTS IN THE WORK-PLACE
Accidents in the workplace are considered to be any accidents that occur occupationally. This can include slip and fall,
ACCIDENTAL INJURY
An accidental injury is a specific type of injury that causes physical damage or pain resulting from an accident.
DEFENSE LAWYER
Also called a defense attorney; a lawyer who represents or defends a defendant in a court of law.
HAZING
Derived from the word "haze"; hazing is a form of harassment, or painful tasks with the intent to cause humiliation or pain; usually occurring in military institutions and college campuses.
LAWYER
A person who is authorized to practice law, conduct lawsuits and provide legal advice.
LEGAL INJURY
Harm, injury or damage resulting from a violation of a legal right.
PRACTICE OF LAW
The learned profession that is mastered by a graduate study in law school and that is responsible for the judicial system. A learned profession such as this is considered to require advanced learning and high principles.
STATUTORY LAW
Statutory laws are a written law that is has been created through legislature or executive branches of government that have been put into place to improve civil order, answer a public need or to simply codify an existing law.
TORT
A tort is when a civil wrong has been committed. Civil wrongs are wrongdoings that harm a person, property, legal rights or breach a duty owed under statutory law.
TORT LAW
Tort law is the area or field of law that includes civil wrongs, the protection of a person's rights, reputation and property; as well as the protection of economic or non-economic damages. Tort law can include but not limited to work injuries, defective products, slip and fall accidents, auto accidents medical mistakes.
TRIAL LAWYER
A trial lawyer is a lawyer who specializes in representing plaintiffs before a court of law.
WHIPLASH INJURY
An injury to the cervical vertebrae (the neck) caused by a rapid acceleration or deceleration; such as an automobile accident.
